DockCharger® Quick Guide

Your Galaxy Watch isn’t charging. Here’s the thirty-second fix.

Nine times out of ten it isn’t the dock and it isn’t the watch — it’s the strap. The Watch Ultra 2 and Watch 9 only charge when they lie perfectly flat, and a loose strap makes that impossible.

The fix

Four steps, half a minute

Do them in this order. Step three is the one almost everybody skips, and it is the one that matters.

1

Tighten the strap

One notch tighter than you would wear it. A loose strap lets the watch tilt, and a tilted watch does not charge.

2

Slide it on flat

Lay the watch onto the dock rather than dropping it in. The back of the case should touch the cradle across its whole surface.

3

Fasten the strap around the cradle

Close the strap around the dock, not around itself. This is what holds the watch down and keeps the coils aligned.

4

Check the light and the screen

A green light on the dock and a charging symbol on the watch. If either is missing, lift the watch and start again at step one.

Still nothing after three tries? Skip ahead to the troubleshooting list — there are four other things that stop this watch from charging, and all of them take under a minute to rule out.

The whole fix, start to finish.

Samsung moved the coil, and the watch got heavier

On the Ultra 2 and the Watch 9, the charging coil sits deeper inside the case than on earlier models, and the weight is spread differently. Together that means the watch only picks up power when the back sits dead flat against the cradle.

A millimetre of tilt is enough to break the connection. That is why the same dock charges an older Galaxy Watch without complaint and seems to fail on this one — the dock is fine, the angle isn’t.

Steady green

Power is flowing. You can leave it. The watch will show a charging symbol within a few seconds.

Orange, or an orange triangle on the watch

The watch is not lying flat. Lift it off, tighten the strap another notch and repeat steps two and three.

Two coils that have to find each other

Wireless charging uses a coil in the dock and a coil in the watch. When they sit directly on top of each other, the first creates a magnetic field the second can turn back into power.

Move them a few millimetres apart and the transfer drops off fast. That is the whole principle, and it is also the whole problem: everything on this page is about keeping those two coils lined up.

If the strap wasn’t it

The watch isn’t centred on the cradle

Look at the watch from directly above. The case should sit in the middle of the cradle, not pushed towards one edge. Nudge it until the gap around it looks even.

There’s a case or cover on the watch

Protective cases add thickness between the two coils and often stop charging altogether. Take the case off and try again — if it charges, the case is the culprit.

The contact surfaces are dirty

Skin oil, sun cream and dust build up on the back of the watch and the face of the cradle. Wipe both with a dry microfibre cloth. Don’t use liquids.

The adapter is too weak

Use a USB-C adapter of at least 9V/2A. Laptop ports, car chargers and older phone adapters often can’t deliver enough power, and the dock will either charge very slowly or not at all.

The cable isn’t fully seated

Unplug the cable at both ends and push it back in until it clicks. A cable that sits a millimetre loose behaves exactly like a broken one.

A dock built for the way this watch sits

Our Galaxy docks hold the Ultra 2 and the Watch 9 flat, so the coils line up the first time instead of the fourth.

Still not charging?

Send us a photo of the watch on the dock. We can usually tell from the picture what’s wrong.
